ILOILO – Authorities intercepted and seized an illegal fishing vessel off Bantigui Island in Carles town as part of Iloilo Province’s intensified campaign against destructive and unregulated fishing practices.
A seaborne operation conducted by the Iloilo Provincial Patrol – Bantay Dagat Task Force on May 17 led to the apprehension of the fishing vessel F/B Seahorse and its captain for engaging in illegal fishing using the banned Danish Seine method — commonly referred to as “super hulbot.”
The operation, carried out using Provincial Patrol Speed Boat No. 1, targeted the waters near Barangay Lantangan, Carles.
Twelve crew members aboard the vessel were also taken into custody but were later released after authorities found no direct involvement in the violation.
The Danish Seine method, prohibited under Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) 246-1 and Section 97 of the Philippine Fisheries Code (Republic Act 8550 as amended by RA 10654), is known for damaging coral reefs and seagrass beds — critical habitats for marine biodiversity.
Confiscated during the operation were one Isuzu diesel engine, a Danish Seine net, six plastic drums of diesel fuel, and approximately ten tubs of fish valued at ₱20,000.
The boat captain is currently detained at the Carles Municipal Police Station pending further investigation.
Meanwhile, the provincial government reiterated its firm stance against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, citing its commitment to marine ecosystem protection and sustainable fishing practices./PN
