ILOILO City – Western Visayas logged a sharp decline in serious crimes and zero major disturbances during the 2026 Semana Santa, with police reporting a 52.09 percent drop in focus crimes amid intensified security operations and strong public cooperation.
The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) said the region remained generally peaceful from March 29 to April 5, even as thousands of travelers flocked to transport hubs, churches, and tourist destinations.
Data showed an overall decrease of 11 crime incidents, or nearly 3 percent lower compared to the same period in 2025.
More notably, key peace and order indicators posted significant declines: peace and order incidents dropped by 32 cases or 17 percent, while focus crimes — which include serious offenses — fell by 25 cases or 52.09 percent.
Despite the improved peace and order situation, authorities recorded four drowning incidents and 240 vehicular accidents during the period, highlighting persistent risks tied to travel and outdoor activities.
Police attributed the peaceful observance to the rollout of LIGTAS SUMVAC 2026, a nationwide security program aimed at ensuring safety during the summer vacation and Holy Week.
Under the program, PRO-6 ramped up operations through increased police visibility, strategic deployment of personnel, and close coordination with local government units and partner agencies.
Assistance desks were established in transport terminals, churches, and tourist areas, while regular patrols, checkpoints, and monitoring were conducted in high-traffic locations across the region.
PRO-6 regional director Police Brigadier General Josefino Ligan emphasized that the outcome reflected a shared responsibility between authorities and the public.
“We are grateful that this year’s Semana Santa was observed peacefully, with no major incidents recorded in Western Visayas,” Ligan said.
“This is a testament to the strong collaboration between our police force, partner agencies, and the community. We thank the public for their vigilance and cooperation in ensuring a safe and meaningful observance of Holy Week,” he added.
Ligan said police will sustain heightened security measures throughout the summer months, as travel and public gatherings are expected to remain high.
Authorities urged the public to remain alert, observe safety protocols, and promptly report any suspicious activities.
With crime indicators significantly down and mass gatherings proceeding without disruption, PRO-6 said the region’s Holy Week experience underscores both effective law enforcement and a community committed to maintaining peace and order./PN
