MANILA – NxLed Chameleons took down another powerhouse team in Choco Mucho Flying Titans with a 25-20, 26-28, 27-25, 25-22 victory in the PVL on Tour on Sunday night at the Batangas City Sports Center.
Rookie Lyann de Guzman delivered another solid performance, finishing with a career-high of 24 points, built on 20 attacks, three service aces, and a block, as the Chameleons improved to a 2-0 record in Pool A.
“I am very excited to be in this team kasi talaga namang may potential itong team na ito, alam kong makakapag Final Four kami ngayong season,” De Guzman said after the win. “Nagpapasalamat ako sa teammates ko at inilaban itong game na ito.”
Down 21-22 late in the fourth set, the Chameleons tied the score at 22-all on an error by Flying Titans’ Aduke Ogunsanya before they took a 23-22 advantage on a conversion by Mayang Nuique.
The Chameleons completed their fight back with an attack from Chiara Permentilla before securing the match-clinching point on a service ace by De Guzman, sending the Flying Titans to a 1-1 record.
Meanwhile, Petro Gazz Angels achieved their first victory with a 25-23, 25-21, 26-24 straight set romp against Galeries Tower Highrisers, improving to a 1-1 slate. The Highrisers dropped to 0-2 slate.
Joy Dacoron contributed 10 points from five attacks, three service aces, and two blocks for the Angels, who bounced back from a surprising 25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 25-15, 15-10 defeat against the NxLed Chameleons last Saturday.
“We are always challengers, so coming off a five-set game (last Saturday night), we were extremely prepared for this match,” Dacoron stated during her Player of the Game interview.
The battle between the two teams was intense in the third set, where the Angels broke the 18-all tie with attacks from rookie Pauline de Guzman, but the Highrisers responded with five consecutive points to take a 23-20 lead.
However, two straight errors from the Highrisers brought the score closer to 22-23 before Nicole Tiamzon unleashed three consecutive points to secure the victory for the Angels./PN
