Deloria feted anew as Tay Tung spikers near Rebisco nat’l semis

MANILA – Bacolod Tay Tung High School kept its unblemished slate in the Rebisco Volleyball League National Championship with another shutout win on Monday night at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The Western Visayas representative made a short work of fellow Visayas squad Leyte National High School 25-14, 25-18 as it moved a win closer to the semifinal round in the weeklong tournament.

Erika Deloria earned her third straight Player of the Game citation after leading Tay Tung with 7 markers, including some crucial points at the latter part of the second set.

Consecutive highlight plays from Alyssa Bertolano at the onset of the first set gave Tay Tung an early advantage. Leyte kept it close but Tay Tung got hits from Deloria to pull away for good.

Tay Tung jumped to a double-digit lead in the second set but Leyte mounted a huge fight-back to come to within 15-21. Shots from Deloria and Annikha Cabasac allowed the Thunderbolts to seal the win.

“It was not the ending we wanted to see from our players. They were too relaxed late in the second set,” said Tay Tung assistant coach Biboy Calamba. “There are still many things we really need to work on.”

After taking a break Tuesday, Tay Tung will resume action Wednesday as it faces Holy Rosary College of Santa Rosa, Laguna./PN
