MANILA – Notwithstanding the “demolition jobs” against her husband, Maria Victoria Mabilog said former Iloilo City mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog left a legacy of good governance to Ilonggos.
“(They) can never diminish Jed’s legacy,” Mrs. Mabilog posted on Facebook.
She was reacting to Tuesday’s 2017 Excellence in Local Governance Awards of the Department of the Interior and Local Government where Iloilo City was cited as “best performing” among other cities in Western Visayas.
“Thank you, good people of Iloilo City. Stay focused on the reason why you all opt to stay in government: to serve the people and to serve them well,” Mrs. Mabilog wrote on Facebook.
The Mabilog couple left the country in August amid perceived threats to the then mayor’s life. They have since not returned.
President Rodrigo Duterte had repeatedly accused the city mayor of being a drug protector, a charge that Mabilog vehemently denied.
In October, Mabilog was dismissed by the Office of the Ombudsman; it found him guilty of serious dishonesty for alleged unexplained wealth.
Mrs. Mabilog said her husband was “very happy” of Iloilo City’s DILG award.
“He is grateful to all his coworkers at city hall in achieving this feat under his guidance and leadership,” according to Mrs. Mabilog.
Mabilog’s vice mayor, the now mayor Jose Espinosa III, received the award on behalf of the city government. The awarding was held at the Iloilo Convention Center.
“Iloilo City has been consistently excellent and outstanding in terms of administrative, social, economic, and environmental governance. Rest assured that the city government will continue to give utmost and excellent service to our constituents,” said Espinosa.
According to Mrs. Mabilog, her husband “hopes that (city) government workers will continue the tradition and culture of excellence, and work more diligently above and beyond the call of duty.”
The Mabilogs have been mum on their whereabouts abroad but it is widely believed they are in Canada.
Mrs. Mabilog is a Canadian citizen.
Iloilo City bagged the award after being named as champion in Environmental Governance and first runner-up in Administrative Governance, Social Governance, and Economic Governance for City category.
The city’s entries for the different excellence awards included the Iloilo Citizens Charter Comics and Traffic Handbook, Talatapan Center, Trabaho sa Barangay, and KABALAKA which stands for Kahublagan sa Barangay para sa Lapnagon nga Kahandaan sa Kalamidad (Movement for Community-Based Disaster Preparedness).
Iloilo City bested Passi City and Roxas City for the “Best Performing City” award.
The city was also cited for Customer Service and Frontline Service Provision, Early Childhood Education, Labor and Employment, and Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation through innovative best practices.
The EXCELL award recognizes local government units that have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in governance, administration, social services, economic development, and environmental management.
The award is also intended to advocate transparency and accountability, positive reinforcement for good performers, popularizing replicable best practices, and educating the electorate./PN
