CAPIZ – The Capiz Provincial Health Office (CPHO) has monitored a 51.26 percent increase in dengue cases in the province from January 1 to May 17, 2025.
Based on the CPHO’s Morbidity Week 20 report, 661 cases and two deaths were recorded – higher than the 437 cases reported during the same period in 2024.
Data collected from the province’s 17 local government units (LGUs) revealed that Roxas City recorded the highest number of cases with 211, followed by Tapaz (88 cases), Jamindan (48), Panay (44), Mambusao (37), Pontevedra (27), Panitan (27), Dumarao (26), Dao (25), Dumalag (22), Ma-ayon (18), Sigma (17), Ivisan (15), Pilar (15), President Roxas (15), Sapi-an (15), and Cuartero (11).
The two dengue-related deaths were both reported in the municipality of Jamindan, representing a case fatality rate of 0.30%.
CPHO data also indicated that the 10 to 19 age group accounted for the highest proportion of cases at 27.69%. The youngest patient recorded was just 10 months old while the oldest was 94 years old.
Meanwhile, areas flagged for clustering of dengue cases include Barangay Poblacion Ilaya in Panay, Barangay Banica in Roxas City, and Barangay Poblacion in Tapaz.
In response to the spike in infections, the provincial government, through the CPHO, has intensified its dengue prevention efforts under the province-wide campaign called “Lamok Buster.”
The campaign emphasizes the 4S strategy: search and destroy mosquito-breeding sites, secure self-protection measures, seek early consultation for symptoms, and say yes to fogging in areas with confirmed case clustering
Health authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant, eliminate stagnant water sources, and consult health centers immediately if symptoms such as high fever, rash, or body pain occur./PN
