Dengue in the age of changing weather patterns

WESTERN Visayas grapples with a significant surge in dengue cases. The Department of Health (DOH) has issued an important reminder: consistency in eliminating mosquito breeding sites is key to curbing the spread of the disease.

However, one factor that cannot be ignored in the fight against dengue is the impact of changing weather patterns. These shifts, particularly more frequent rainfall and increased humidity, are contributing to the surge in mosquito populations, making it more important than ever to integrate climate change awareness into public health campaigns.

The statistics speak for themselves. From January 1 to February 15, dengue cases in Western Visayas spiked by 72%, with 1,703 cases reported compared to 988 cases in the same period last year. These rising numbers coincide with the region’s early rains, which create ideal breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes — responsible for transmitting the deadly disease. The presence of stagnant water in our communities is a direct consequence of these weather patterns, exacerbating the problem. What was once considered a seasonal threat is now a year-round challenge, with more frequent outbreaks due to unpredictable weather.

The connection between climate and public health is becoming clearer. In the case of dengue, higher rainfall increases the number of waterlogged areas, allowing mosquitoes to breed more easily. What’s troubling is that, with climate change, weather patterns are becoming more erratic — bringing longer rainy periods followed by extreme heat. Such fluctuations not only fuel mosquito reproduction but also increase the spread of diseases like dengue, putting local communities at greater risk. The ongoing surge in cases is an unfortunate reminder that the rainy season is no longer the only time when dengue should be top of mind.

This calls for an urgent shift in public health strategies. Climate change awareness must become an integral component of our fight against dengue. As Dr. Bea Camille Natalaray, Medical Officer IV at DOH Region 6, aptly pointed out, “Consistency is key,” and this consistency must now extend to the understanding that weather changes must be factored into our prevention efforts. Rather than limiting our focus to specific seasons, local governments, health authorities, and communities must recognize the year-round threat posed by climate-induced weather changes.

A more climate-conscious approach could involve regular community-based education on the environmental factors that promote mosquito breeding. Citizens need to be aware that stagnant water, even in the smallest containers, can become breeding grounds. Additionally, local governments can promote the use of weather forecasting data to predict mosquito hotspots and strategize timely, targeted eradication efforts. Seasonal campaigns can be adjusted to incorporate local climate patterns, ensuring that preventive measures are effective year-round. Incorporating climate resilience into infrastructure planning — such as proper drainage systems and better waste management — could greatly reduce the breeding grounds available to Aedes mosquitoes, providing long-term solutions to the dengue problem.

Ultimately, addressing dengue in the age of changing weather patterns must go beyond eliminating mosquito breeding sites or increasing awareness — it is also understanding that the climate crisis is inseparable from our public health efforts.
