ILOILO City – The Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6 welcomed the drug testing for teachers and students.
The tests start this June. It will be mandatory for all public elementary and secondary school teachers and random for high school students.
According to DepEd assistant regional director Victor De Gracia, their central office will pick which schools in Western Visayas will have drug tests.
The central office, however, has yet to release the guidelines, said De Gracia.
DepEd Region 6 will create a team to facilitate the drug tests that will be carried out in coordination with the Department of Health (DOH).
DepEd itself will fund the tests.
De Gracia said teachers acknowledge the drug tests as in line with the campaign against illegal drugs by the Duterte administration.
“As government workers we support the campaign,” said De Gracia.
He also said the drug tests are beneficial to teachers. They will be freed from suspicion of being drug users, he explained.
For students, the random drug tests will help identify those on substance abuse.
Over 480,000 high school (private and public) students are expected to enroll this school year 2017-2018 in Western Visayas./PN
