DUMAGUETE City – Fire razed three houses and damaged another in a compound in Purok Masanagon, Barangay Mangnao yesterday.
At one of the houses was a wake. The remains of the dead person were burned, too.
Neighbors and friends attending the vigil ran for safety, leaving behind the coffin of their departed, when they noticed that fire was eating up a portion of the house.
A motorist reported the incident to the fire station around 2:25 a.m.
When firefighters arrived, the blaze already engulfed the three houses built of mixed materials and partially damaged the fourth one.
Investigation showed the fire started at the residence of Rodrigo Pacija.
It spread to the next house owned by Estelita Pacija, where a vigil was being held for her husband, Edward, whose remains got burned beyond recognition despite being placed in a metal casket.
The blaze also razed the next house owned by Bonifacio Organista and partially burned the house of Rosalina Corsame.
Investigators have yet to determine the cause of fire and the cost of damage, Fire Officer 1 Mark Susaña said. (PNA)
