ILOILO City – Did yesterday’s Iloilo Bike Festival set a new world record for the longest single line of moving bicycles?
As of this writing, the international accounting firm Price Waterhouse was still verifying the data, according to Ronald Raymond Sebastian, organizer of the bike festival.
The current record is being held by Bangladesh – 1,186 bikers forming a long line.
The 35-year-old biker Ivon Padilla said he enjoyed the ride on the 11.59-kilometer Iloilo circumferential road although the scorching heat of the afternoon sun was a big challenge.
“Record-setting or not, when I’m old I have a story to tell my grandchildren – that I once joined an attempt to break a world record,” he told Panay News.
For this pioneering attempt to break the world record, Sebastian described the number of participants that the bike festival gathered as already “okay” although he observed several problems.
“Some bikes broke down. Some bikers strayed out of the line. But the number of participants was really huge,” said Sebastian.
The initial figure he had was 1,255 participants but there were a number of disqualified entries and as of this writing this was still being verified.
The bike festival organizer was targeting 2,000 participants.
“We were more than Bangladesh’s number. The attempt is to be submitted to (the) Guinness (Book of World Records) for scrutiny,” said Atty. Pablo Nava IV, president of the Federation of Iloilo Cycling Organizations.
Sebastian lamented that some bikers did not follow the guidelines such as the following:
- wear a helmet
-
wear the Iloilo event team t-shirt
-
follow the team marshal
-
check the bicycle before the start of the activity
-
stay in line
-
maintain a maximum of one bicycle length distance, and
-
use hand signals.
Other instructions were: no overtaking, no selfies or taking of pictures, no racing, no stopping, no swerving.
“Don’t break the line, don’t fall behind and follow the pace of your team leader,” Sebastian added.
He also said several bikers who wanted to join failed to register because they were late for the event.
One participant, the 30-year-old Cyrus Abinigay of Barangay Hibao-an, Mandurriao district, said he wanted to be a part of a “historic event.”
Abinigay said he had been cycling the past four years.
“The attempt brought bikers across different divides. The scorching heat of the sun was beaten by the Ilonggo bikers’ determination to break the record – that alone made the attempt beyond the prize of a world record,” said Jo Jan Paul Peñol of Gugma sa Goma biking group.
Unity, he said, was the “best prize” of yesterday’s event.
