ILOILO City – The Dinagyang Festival caught the interest of the international community. The city government received four invitations for Dinagyang to perform in the global tage this year.
“This is an opportunity for us to bring Dinagyang to Ilonggos and Filipinos abroad and strongly promote and sell Iloilo City to tourists and investors,” said Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
Champion Tribu Salognon of Jaro National High School will be competing against the country’s top festivals at the Aliwan Fiesta in Manila in April.
For global trips, Dinagyang got invitations to perform at the following:
* Philippine Independence Day celebration in Sydney, Australia in June
* Quebec, Canada in August
* Anseong, South Korea in October; and
* Santa Parade in Auckland, New Zealand in November.
The Dinagyang is a consistent performer in the Philippine Independence Day parade in New York, USA in recent years.
The festival started in 1968, a year after a replica of the Sto. Niño was brought from Cebu to the San Jose Parish.
The image, accompanied by devotees from Cebu, was enthusiastically received by the Ilonggos who danced on the streets of the city to the tune of rumbling drums.
According to Mabilog, Dinagyang has become the leading tourism, cultural, religious and socio-economic promotional vehicle and symbol of Iloilo.
“It reflects city’s continuing progress and sustainable development,” said Mabilog. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
