ILOILO City – Gangs helped during the Dinagyang cleanup drive early morning of Jan. 23 a day after the festival.
Twenty-eight members of two identified gangs – “SHKTONG” and “DICTA” – fulfilled their promise to help clean the long stretch of General Luna Street in the aftermath of Dinagyang.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog commended the Women and Children Desk of Iloilo City Police Office (WCPD-ICPO) and City Social Welfare and Development Office for encouraging gang members to undertake worthwhile endeavors to the community.
These groups voluntarily submitted themselves to WCPD-ICPO two weeks ago after the names of their groups were listed among 28 gangs identified and validated by the ICPO.
WCPD-ICPO chief Senior Inspector Marie Faith Superio, and Social Welfare Officer III Merlyn Gison, Molo district head and Social Welfare Officer I Carmela Alson, focal person of Child and Youth Welfare Program, supervised the cleanup.
“This is the start of engaging the youth, especially members of the gangs, in diverting their actions towards positive and productive activities,” said Gison.
Social workers and police personnel advised gang members to channel their energies through worthy community service rather than warring with each other groups. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
