MANILA – De La Salle University halted the University of Santo Tomas’ domination after bagging it’s first-ever poomsae championship in the UAAP Season 79 taekwondo on Saturday at the Blue Eagles Gym.
DLSU finally captured the elusive overall championship after winning two gold, two silver and a bronze medal. The two-time titlist UST, meanwhile, settled for second place with two gold and two bronze medals.
“Well, in the very beginning, we always have the problem with the number of players. We are fortunate that this season, we are able to get quality players,” said DLSU head coach JP Sabido.
Cebuana Rinna Babanto captured the first gold for DLSU after topping the women’s individual with 8.43 points, beating Far Eastern University’s Charisse Jasmin (8.06) and the University of the Philippines’ Patricia Jubelag (7.96).
DLSU’s second gold came from the mixed pair of Raphael Mella and Angelica Gaw with 8.66 points, trumping UP’s Dustin Mella and Janna Oliva (8.59) and UST’s Jerel Dalida and Jocel Ninobla (8.53).
Babanto, Gaw and Hernandez claimed the silver medal in the women’s team event with 8.54 points, while Mella, Mcavyngr Alob and Benjamin Sembrano also clinched silver in the men’s team male category with a score of 8.41.
UST topped the men’s individual behind Rodolfo Reyes (8.58) and the men’s team of Reyes, Dalida and Adrian Ang (8.64), while the women’s team of Ninobla, Jhoana Razon and Cyrinne Abenir (8.44) secured the school’s other bronze medal./PN
