MANILA – De La Salle University Green Archers relied on Ben Mbala’s career-game to score 106-100 against University of the East Red Warriors in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball.
The Cameroonian center finished with career-high 39 points and 15 rebounds while Abu Tratter also had a career-game of 24 points and 10 boards for the defending champion.
Green Archers overcame the opponent despite the 49-point explosion of Alvin Pasaol from Red Warriors, which slid to 0-6.
Pasaol’s output was the highest in the league since 2002 when then National University Bulldog Jeff Napa posted 43 markers.
The victory on Wednesday night – La Salle’s fifth in six matches – will hugely boost their bid for a titanic clash with rival Ateneo Blue Eagles, currently on first place (6-0), on Sunday night.
Green Archers had a strong 11-4 start in the game at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum on inside hits by Mbala but Red Warriors clawed its way back to tie the count at 17-all before snatching a 23-22 lead at the end of the period on a basket by Pasaol.
Both teams exchanged leads early in the second quarter but conversions from Prince Rivero and Mbala allowed Green Archers to build a 40-34 edge, which grew further by 12 points at the half.
Green Archers continued its dominance in the second half on inside incursions by Mbala and Tratter to increase the advantage 100-75 early in the fourth on a triple by Andrei Caracut.
But Red Warriors made a huge rally on the hot hands of Pasaol to trim the deficit 97-104 on hits by Philip Manalang and Mark Olayon, but Tratter got an inside conversion that raised the LA Salle lead 106-97 with under a minute left./PN
