MANILA – For leading his team to a second straight UAAP men’s basketball finals appearance, De La Salle University Green Archers center Benoit Mbala captured his second UAAP MVP trophy.
The Cameroonian center was a runaway winner for the citation after the double-round eliminations with his 96.5833 statistical points (SPs) after averaging 26.0 points, 13.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.5 blocks per game.
However, despite claiming the highest individual award, the 6-foot-8 Mbala said he would rather dwell on helping Green Archers complete its title-retention bid when it faces rival Ateneo Blue Eagles at the start of the best-of-three finals today.
“It feels nice to win the UAAP MVP but that is not my main objective,” said Mbala. “My eyes are on the championship. That has always been my focus and not on the individual awards.”
Also in top five are Ilonggo Ferdinand “Thirdy” Ravena III of the Blue Eagles (66.5 SPs), Rodolfo Alejandro of National University Bulldogs (63.86), Alvin Pasaol of University of the East Red Warriors (63.43), and Adamson Falcons’ Papi Sarr (63.15).
Completing the top 10 are Bulldogs’ Issa Gaye (57.57 SPs), University of Santo Tomas Tigers’ Steve Akomo (56.77), Green Archers Ricci Rivero (56.29), University of the Philippines Maroons’ Andres Desiderio (54.5), and Blue Eagles’ Chibueze Ikeh (49.36).
Maroons’ Juani Gomez de Liano, meanwhile, claimed the Rookie of the Year citation with 46.69 SPs for his averages of 11.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and one steal a game./PN
