ILOILO City – This year’s dengue cases in Western Visayas were 64 percent lower than last year’s, according to the Department of Health (DOH).
As of Nov. 25, DOH Region 6 recorded 9,279 cases with 75 deaths – 14,182 lower than the 25,703 cases (with 85 deaths) reported in 2016 (January to November).
Negros Occidental had the most number of dengue cases at 3,861 with 36 deaths, followed by Bacolod City (1,741 cases with 14 deaths).
According to Dr. Renilyn Reyes, head of DOH-6’s Family, Health and Nutrition Cluster, those infected were from as young as one year old and as old as 94 years old.
But the age group with most number of cases was from one to 10 years old, she said.
Other dengue cases in the region were the following:
* Iloilo – 1,097 with seven deaths
* Aklan – 956 with four deaths
* Antique – 676 with 10 deaths
* Iloilo City – 387 with three deaths
* Capiz – 320 with one death
* Guimaras – 40 with zero death
* Others – 201
Reyes saw a three-year pattern in the surge and drop of dengue cases in t he region.
“Ang last naton nga damo ang kaso was 2016. This year nagnubo. Kon lantawon naton ang trend, by 2018 daw gina-predict man naton nga medyo manubo man ang kaso. So ang balantayan naton is 2019,” said Reyes.
In 2016, DOH-6 recorded a total 25,461 dengue cases. In 2013, cases reached over 20,000, too.
Reyes said Western Visayans must not be complacent despite the drop in dengue cases this year.
Communities must continue implementing anti-dengue strategies such as regular cleanup of surroundings.
