MANILA – The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday approved the filing of frustrated murder charges against self-confessed Davao Death Squad (DDS) assassin Edgar Matobato.

The case against Matobato stems from his failed attempt to kill Department of Agriculture adjudicator Abeto Salcedo Jr. in Digos City, Davao del Sur in October 2014.

“The frustrated murder charges against Edgar Matobato will be filed before the trial court in the following days,” DOJ secretary Vitaliano Aguirre said in a press conference on Friday.

Aguirre said the filing of charges against Matobato is based on the recommendation of the Digos City prosecutor’s office, which found probable cause to file a complaint against the alleged gunman.

Matobato, who is under the custody of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, first appeared publicly in a Senate inquiry, tagging Duterte to hundreds of murders perpetuated by the DDS in his city.

Matobato reportedly approached then DOJ secretary and now Sen. Leila de Lima, who is currently at odds with Duterte over the prevalence of extrajudicial killings, so that he can testify against the former Davao City mayor.

After the much-publicized Senate inquiry, the committee on justice made the recommendation to file kidnapping, murder and perjury charges against Matobato in its draft report released late last year./PN
