MANILA – Filipino mixed martial artists Roy Doliguez and Gene Eustaquio had different fates in the main event of the ONE: Total Victory fight card at the Jakarta Convention Center in Jakarta, Indonesia on Saturday night.
Doliguez finally notched his first victory under the MMA promotion after overcoming
a poor start with a stunning third-round stoppage victory against the heavily favored Yago Bryan of Brazil.
Eustaquio, meanwhile, suffered a split-decision defeat to Kairat Akhmetov of Kazakhstan in a title-eliminator match for the ONE flyweight championship of Adriano Moraes of Brazil.
The 35-year-old Doliguez (7-4) seemed headed to his fourth ONE FC loss after being dominated by Bryan in the first two rounds until the Filipino fighter came up with a shocker in the third round.
Doliguez, a former professional boxer, relied on his better striking game as he pounded Bryan (3-3) with a killer punch, forcing the referee to stop the match at the 2:58 mark of the final round.
In the other match, Eustaquio (9-6) was the aggressor early in the face-off, landing a couple of kicks to the face of Akhmetov (24-1). The Kazakhstan MMA fighter took the fight to the ground but the Filipino managed to defend.
Akhmetov gained the advantage in the third and final round as he floored Eustaquio with a punch and also holding him to a guillotine choke late in the match.
Meanwhile, Filipino Ramon Gonzales (2-2) also came up with a victory in the undercard bout as he halted Chinese foe Liu De Li Ge Ri Hu (2-3) with a triangle choke midway in the second round./PN
