VICTORIAS City — Don Bosco Technical Institute–Elan Vita (DBTI–Elan Vita) cemented its reputation as the team to beat in Negros Occidental youth football, retaining the U19 Governor’s Cup crown after goalkeeper Andy Salud delivered a title-clinching performance in a nerve-wracking 4-3 penalty shootout win over STI–West Negros University (STIWNU).
In a championship match defined by shifting pressure and standout individual efforts, Salud emerged as the decisive figure—turning back two penalties in the shootout after a 1-1 deadlock held through regular and extra time. His shot-stopping heroics also earned him the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Best Goalkeeper awards.
DBTI struck with stunning urgency, grabbing the lead seconds after kickoff as Early Caluyo pounced for the opener. But STIWNU settled down and gradually dictated tempo, pushing aggressively through the midfield until their persistence paid off in the 72nd minute with Luke Apuhan’s equalizer.
The deadlock held despite both squads generating chances in extra time, sending the title duel to penalties. In the shootout, DBTI converted through Pagador, Canoy, Dela Serna, and Padilla, while STIWNU responded with makes from Apustolero, Ningasca, and Apuhan.
Salud’s two stops ultimately proved the difference.
The champions also celebrated another major individual citation as Gian Andre Cañete was named Best Defender. STIWNU did not leave empty-handed, with Apuhan earning Best Striker honors and John Rhyle Tañaña being recognized as Best Midfielder.
The Governor’s Cup, supported by the Negros Occidental provincial government under Governor Eugenio Lacson, once again highlighted the province’s deep and rising grassroots football talent. Victorias City Mayor JunB Bantug and Bago City Mayor Mayette Javeliana were also acknowledged for hosting key matches and providing logistical support./PN
