ILOILO City – The Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 6 today spearheaded the consultation dialogue and workshop on the national development plan for tourism roads for implementation from 2018 to 2022.
The workshop, held at Days Hotel, Iloilo, served as a venue for tourism and planning officers from Aklan, Antique, Guimaras, Capiz, and Iloilo to gather and identify priority tourism road infrastructure projects.
According to DOT regional director Atty. Helen Catalbas, the workshop hopes to add road projects that will “enhance accessibility to numerous tourism service centers and destinations, airports and seaports in Western Visayas.”
“[The tourism road implementation] has been one of the biggest tourism programs that benefited the grassroots level within tourist destinations as it brings these destinations closer to basic community services. The bulk of tourists who came because of improved road access created more jobs for the locals and generated income and investments for the community,” Catalbas said.
Data showed that from 2012 to 2015, 59 road projects were completed, including 13 in Iloilo City; 11 in Negros Occidental; eight in the province of Iloilo; seven in Aklan; six in Guimaras; six in Bacolod City; four in Antique; and four in Capiz. The projects amounted to P2.9 billion.
“Tourism roads are vital for tourism development as they enhance the experience of the tourists visiting the destinations. They provide ease of access to the suppliers providing raw materials to the tourism establishments, making quality services accessible to all,” Catalbas said. (With a report from DOT/PN)
