ILOILO City – His family was losing sleep over President Rodrigo Duterte’s linking him to illegal drugs, according to Mayor Sigfriedo Betita of Carles, Iloilo.
People were talking behind his back, he said.
“When I dine in restaurants, I would see people whispering. It’s hurtful,” said Betita.
This was why he found some relief over recent reports that he had been cleared of involvement in illegal drugs, said Betita.
“I haven’t received any official communication yet from investigators but I’m already happy,” he said in a radio interview.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Region 6 initially investigated Betita, followed by CIDG’s national headquarters.
Betita said Task Force Aguila of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) also investigated him.
“My family couldn’t sleep after they heard the news about my supposed involvement in illegal drugs,” said Betita.
August last year, President Duterte called Iloilo the “most shabu-lized” in the country and named four Iloilo mayors as coddlers of drug traffickers. These were Betita, Jed Patrick Mabilog of Iloilo City, Mariano Malones of Maasin, and Alex Centena of Calinog. All of them denied the President’s allegation.
Betita said he had no idea that the middle name of slain suspected drug lord Melvin “Boyet” Odicta Sr. was Betita.
He thanked the people of Carles for their support and for not believing that he was a drug protector./PN
