ILOILO City – The city government’s Task Force on Anti-Drug Abuse and Education (TFADAE) and the Iloilo City Local Youth Development Office kicked off this year’s advocacy campaign against illegal drugs for city public schools at Judith Lazarraga (JL) Tiongco Memorial Elementary School.
“One important step in the fight against illegal drugs is prevention, and we can do this by engaging the youth to be part of the campaign so they can stay away from drugs,” said Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, chairperson of the Iloilo City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (ICADAC).
The series of symposium from Feb. 7 to 28 includes the following topics:
* Why Young People Turn to Drugs
* Good Habits of Drug-Free Youth
* Ill-Effects of Illegal Drugs
* Salient Provisions of Republic Act 9165, and
* Drug Situation in the district where the school is located.
Aside from JL Tiongco Memorial Elementary School, the task force will also visit the following schools:
* Quintin Salas Elementary School
* Sto. Domingo Elementary School
* Sto. Niño Sur Elementary School
* Melchor L. Nava National High School
* Jaro II Elementary School, and
* Nabitasan Elementary School.
Anti-drug symposia in other schools and in barangays are already being planned within the year.
In 2016, TFADAE conducted symposia in 21 barangays, seven private secondary schools and six public high schools.
A special symposium was also organized in partnership with Iloilo City Youth and Sports Development Division for players involved in their basketball tournament last year.
TFADAE, under the ICADAC, is a composite team from the city government, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and Iloilo City Police Office.
“Our anti-illegal drug programs have no let-up; we are relentless in this campaign in line with the thrust of the national government as we strive to continue making Iloilo a safe and livable city,” said Mabilog. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
