KALIBO, Aklan – A father from Malinao town was charged after accidentally dousing his 4-year-old son with gasoline while setting their house on fire. The incident resulted in the boy suffering from third-degree burns.
A case for violation of the Special Protection of Children against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act was filed against the 37-year-old Russel Zausa of Barangay Bulabod, Malinao.
Police from Malinao and Kalibo towns arrested him over the weekend when he tried to visit his son at the provincial hospital here.
Zausa was detained at the Aklan Rehabilitation Center in Barangay Nalook here after failing to post an P80,000 bail bond.
The son suffered from third-degree burns on the chest, leg and body.
His photographs while on a hospital bed was uploaded on Facebook — it was not immediately clear how — and went viral. Many users criticized the father’s alleged maltreatment of the boy.
Zausa’s wife Cherry, 35, said she and her drunken husband had an argument around 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25.
“Galing siya sa trabaho. Lasing ang asawa ko,” Cherry said. “Umutang siya ng gasolina sa kalapit na tindahan at may dalang lighter. Nadamay pa ang bata.”
Returning home with a jug of gasoline, Zausa poured the fluid on their house and set it on fire while his family was still inside.
Seeing what happened, the neighbors grabbed a blanket and covered the boy with it, and rushed him to the Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital.
A remorseful Zausa said he meant his two sons — another was aged 11 years old — and wife no harm.
But Cherry said this was not the first time Zausa went unruly while drunk.
“Sinisira din niya ang mga gamit namin ’pag lasing siya,” she said. “Araw-araw kaming nagtatalo sa bahay. ’Pag may pera at may trabaho siya, lagi siyang umiinom. Napakulong ko siya dati dahil sa kalasingan.” (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
