ILOILO City – The Aklan Green Product Expo 2016 opened on Sept. 26 with the motto, “Green Fashion, Green Lifestyle, Green Business.” In contrast to the product expos of past years, this year’s expo primarily features environmentally safe products made from indigenous materials, using eco-friendly production technologies.
A total of 41 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) participated this year, and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Aklan hopes that they will be able to reach or exceed the P6-million goal in sales.
Ma. Carmen Iturralde, officer-in-charge and provincial director of DTI Aklan, is particularly optimistic about this year’s expo.
“We hope that this time, we will not only meet but surpass again the target,” Iturralde said.
Aside from sales and business-related goals, this year’s event also emphasized the importance of green practices, which include the use of indigenous raw materials as well as the utilization of waste materials, like scrap wood, and turning them into useful products like mirrors frames, lamp shades and fabrics.
Iturralde emphasized the importance of product development, particularly in regards to environmental conservation.
“We are continually doing product development, as mentioned by our speakers,” Iturralde said. “In the past 20 years, the products have come a long way. So we continue product development and this will make products more competitive.”
Iturralde furthermore said they are hoping that all local government units in Aklan will be able to establish their own Negosyo Centers so they could assist MSMEs.
Participating businesses in the fair sold items like processed food, soaps and shampoos, clothes, handicrafts, toys, and pineapple clothing, among others. (PNA/PN)
