ILOILO City – How certain is President Rodrigo Duterte’s attendance in the Dinagyang Festival?
“Ninety percent,” said Mayor Jose Espinosa III.
Highlights of the Dinagyang Festival, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, will be from Jan. 26 to 28 next year.
“If it happens that the President decides to watch the performances, he is going to be the first president in the 50 years of Dinagyang to do it,” Espinosa said.
In 2008 then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (now Pampanga representative) went to Dinagyang but attended only the high mass at the San Jose Church.
Considering the possible attendance of Duterte, adjustments must be made with the main activities, Espinosa said during a meeting with the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc. (IDFI) on Dec. 1.
The ati tribe performances should be given more time and organizers should do away with lengthy speeches, said the mayor.
Ten groups will participate in the ati street dance competition on Jan. 28.
Ten festivals from municipalities in Western Visayas will also join the regional Kasadyahan cultural competition on Jan. 27.
Additional attractions include the Lighted Floats Parade in the evening of Jan. 27 and the International Cultural Show that will feature performers from South Korea and New Zealand, said IDFI president Ramon Cua Locsin.
Meanwhile the Iloilo City Police Office created Task Group Dinagyang that will lead security operations during the festival.
Telecommunications signal will be shut down during specific hours. A gun ban was also being pushed.
The 2018 Dinagyang Festival has the theme “Señor Santo Niño: Chaste, Poor and Obedient Son of God” and the tagline “Timeless Tradition, Culture and Devotion.” (PNA)
