MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte asked Congress to further extend the martial law in Mindanao for another year.
The President wanted the military rule to remain in the southern island from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 next year.
Duterte’s request was based on recommendations from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
“Despite the death of Hapilon and the Maute brothers, the remnants of their groups have continued to rebuild their organization through the recruitment and training of new members and fighters to carry on the rebellion,” Duterte said in a Dec. 8 letter to Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III and House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.
According to Duterte, 185 people on the Martial Law Arrest Order remain at large.
In addition, the Turaifie Group, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and the National People’s Army “continue to remain a national security concern,” he said.
“A further extension of the…martial law and suspension of the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus in Mindanao will help the AFP, the PNP and all other law enforcement agencies to quell completely and put an end to the ongoing rebellion in Mindanao and prevent the same from escalating to other parts of the country,” said Duterte.
Duterte placed Mindanao under martial law on May 23 after the Islamic State-linked Maute group laid siege in Marawi, the largest Muslim-majority city in the country.
Under the Constitution the proclamation was good for only 60 days but Congress extended this up until Dec. 31, also upon Duterte’s request./PN
