MANILA – Rodrigo Duterte raised a toast to the growing friendship between the Philippines and Japan during a dinner that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe hosted during the Philippine president’s official visit to Japan.

“Suffice it to say that this frequency of interaction is friendship that goes beyond official lines,” Duterte said. “It is a friendship that is held dearly and valued so much more than words can describe.”

In January Abe went to the Philippines and promised to boost military ties and cooperation with Duterte. He also committed to support the administration’s war on drugs.

“Excellency, I will strive to keep that friendship, amity and cooperation between us, our nations and our peoples going from strength to further strength,” Duterte said in his toast remarks.

The Philippine chief executive also wished Japan’s Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko the best of health, and Abe continued success and good health as well.

“To the peace and prosperity of the Japanese people, and to the enduring camaraderie and harmony between the Philippines and Japan,” Duterte said.

Abe, for his part, raised a toast to Duterte’s “good health” and “great success.”
He also called for further cooperation between the Philippines and Japan.

“I owe you so much, and your dedication is what made possible for us to enjoy today’s wonderful ties between Japan and the Philippines,” the Japanese leader said.

“And taking this opportunity, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation and ask for your continuous support as we further develop this special relationship,” Abe added./PN
