MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte will push Congress to pass a law imposing a total ban on the use of firecrackers.
Duterte “wants Congress to enact this law at the soonest time possible so that the public debate on the banning of fireworks and pyrotechnics could begin as early as possible,” Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said on Tuesday.
The President has directed the Department of Trade and Industry to provide affected workers with livelihood assistance, said Roque.
“Now he (Duterte) realizes that there will be about 75,000 individuals who are working in this industry,” the spokesman said.
Duterte’s proposal to prohibit firecrackers was a “result of his own prognosis that firecrackers and pyrotechnics are inimical to human health and safety,” Roque added.
Davao City, the President’s hometown, has an ordinance totally banning firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices, the Palace official noted./PN
