Alaska makes 6th straight victory in Comm’s Cup

MANILA – Columbian Dyip kept itself in contention in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup with a come-from-behind 115-107 victory over Phoenix Fuel Masters on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

John Fields III led Dyip with double-double 29 points and 26 rebounds. lenn Khobuntin added career-best 18 points while Jerramy King and Rashawn McCarthy had 15 points each.

The victory ended Dyip’s three-game losing skid and, at the same time, improved its record to 4-5 with still two games to spare – against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings and GlobalPort Batang Pier.

“This is really big for us because it puts us in a good position for the playoffs,” said Dyip head coach Ricky Dandan. “There were times that we were down but we looked at all of the positives as much as we could.”

Down for the most part of the first half, Dyip came alive in the third period behind locals Khobuntin, King, McCarthy, and Ronald Tubid to snatch a 75-73 lead.

Dyip sustained its aggression in the fourth with consecutive points from Eric James Camson to widen the lead to double digits. It reached its largest 112-99 with 37 seconds left.

ACES POSTS 6TH STRAIGHT WIN

In the second game, Alaska Aces bucked the absence of suspended Calvin Abueva and Jeron Teng to score a 103-99 victory over Magnolia Hotshots. It was Aces’ sixth straight win.

Alaska had a strong start in the first half, leading by as much as 11 points on hits by Antonio Campbell. Hotshots went on a run in the third to momentarily take a lead but Aces leaned on Vic Manuel to regain a 71-70 edge.

Magnolia was clinging to an 83-79 lead when Alaska went on a run behind Manuel and Campbell for a 92-88 edge. Hotshots rallied to within 93-94 but conversions from Manuel and Jvee Casio sealed the win for Aces.

Manuel led Aces (6-1) with 35 points while Campbell added double-double 28 points and 14 rebounds. Hotshots dropped to 3-4./PN
