MANILA — Playing with the poise of a seasoned contender, Alexandra Eala dismantled Polish veteran Magda Linette in straight sets to barge into the semifinals of the ASB Classic, further cementing her growing reputation as one of the tour’s most dangerous young players.
The 20-year-old Filipina, seeded fourth in the WTA 250 event, delivered a composed 6-3, 6-2 victory over fifth seed Magda Linette on Friday at Center Court in Auckland, New Zealand, wrapping up the quarterfinal clash in just one hour and 37 minutes.
“It feels so good. Thank you, everybody, for being here,” Eala said moments after the match. “I did my best. I do what I can and if I see an opening, I think it’s important that I go for it. Today was difficult.”
“Obviously, Magda being such an experienced player and I have difficulties playing against her before so I’m happy that I’ve seen my level increase and my level improve,” she added.
The Southeast Asian Games gold medalist showcased maturity beyond her years, overcoming Linette’s power game with superior shot selection and relentless pressure on returns. Eala finished without an ace but maximized her chances, converting four of 13 break points, while limiting Linette to just two breaks from seven opportunities.
Despite being out-aced 3-0, Eala controlled the flow of rallies, winning 62 total points to Linette’s 53 and posting a strong 66.7 percent success rate on first-serve points. She also landed 61 percent of her first serves, providing stability throughout the contest.
Defensively, Eala stood firm, saving five of seven break points she faced. Her edge on first-serve returns — winning 48.4 percent of those points compared to Linette’s 33.3 percent — proved decisive, particularly in the second set where she broke serve twice to close out the match.
With the victory, Eala advanced to the semifinals where she will face China’s Wang Xinyu, who progressed after her quarterfinal opponent Francesca Jones retired due to injury.
