War casualties
LET’S KEEP this in mind all the time: in war, there are no victors, only victims.
With war in their midst, many of our brothers and sisters in Mindanao, particularly in Marawi City, fear for their safety and that of their loved ones. Resolution must be found at the soonest time possible so that Marawi – and the whole of Mindanao for that matter – can return to normalcy.
Massive relief assistance must be done. The Department of Social Work and Development, Department of Health and Commission on Human Rights must get their act together in partnership with non-government organizations and the local governments. They must be at the forefront of relief efforts to distribute food, medicine and to provide counsel to our affected brothers and sisters, be they Muslims, Christians or lumads.
The safety of residents fleeing the armed skirmishes must be ensured by concerned government agencies. Evacuation should be carried out in orderly fashion. Let no more innocent civilians be caught in the crossfire between the military and Maute terrorist group. We denounce that group’s attack of Marawi City which has resulted in the death of innocent civilians and destruction of properties and livelihoods.
But we also remind the Armed Forces of the Philippines to uphold the rule of law as they protect the territorial integrity of the country. In truth, we cannot afford armed hostilities because this will only set back efforts to bring economic and social progress to Muslim Mindanao.
The peace and prosperity of Mindanao will eventually result in the welfare, stability and security of the entire Philippines.
