GOVERNMENT troops have rescued three Malaysians held captive by the Abu Sayyaf, the military announced yesterday. Our security forces are stepping up offensives against the notorious terrorist group.

Yes, the Abu Sayyaf is not a secessionist movement like the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Moro National Liberation Front. It has no ideology whatsoever like the Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army.

The Abu Sayyaf is a band of hoodlums making money by taking people – mostly foreigners – hostage and demanding payment for their release. In fact, the Abu Sayyaf has grown so notorious that it has been included in the terrorist lists of the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United Nations Security Council.

This is a group of hardened criminals willing to cut people’s head off if they are refused ransom. They have shown no remorse whatsoever for their atrocities. Surely, they will continue doing their evil way to make money and terrorize Mindanao. They are a serious law enforcement problem.

The full force of the law should apply to Abu Sayyaf leaders and members. The government should pursue them until they are neutralized and brought to justice.

We should never forget the Sipadan kidnapping, the Dos Palmas kidnapping, the Davao airport bombing, the Superferry bombing (considered as the worst maritime terrorist attack in the world) and the many more acts of terror that have taken the lives of innocent Filipinos and foreigners.

The elimination of the Abu Sayyaf should serve as an example and stern warning to other hooligans engaged in kidnappings and other felonious activities that crime does not pay.
