MANILA — Filipino gymnast Karl Jahrel Eldrew Yulo delivered a dazzling routine to capture the gold medal in the men’s floor exercise at the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup on Saturday night in Antalya, Turkey, further boosting the Philippines’ growing reputation in international gymnastics.
Yulo scored 14.100 points to top the event finals at the Ibrahim Colak Gymnastics Hall, edging Eamon Montgomery of Ireland, who settled for silver with 13.833, while Rayderley Zapata of Spain claimed the bronze medal with 13.333.
The Filipino gymnast executed a strong and composed routine that earned the highest score among the finalists, securing the top podium finish against a competitive international field.
Montgomery finished second after a solid performance, while Zapata, a seasoned international competitor, completed the podium with his third-place finish.
Gymnasts from Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, Norway, and Slovenia rounded out the rest of the finalists in the floor exercise event.
Yulo’s triumph adds another international milestone for Philippine gymnastics, continuing the family’s presence on the global stage as he follows the footsteps of his elder brother, two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Edriel Yulo.
Prior to his gold medal run in Turkey, the younger Yulo also competed in the Baku, Azerbaijan leg of the World Cup series, where he finished fourth in the floor exercise and seventh in the horizontal bar earlier this month./PN
