MANILA — The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses finished the first round of the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament on a high note after dismantling the Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws in straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-20, Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Powered by a balanced attack and disciplined floor defense, the Golden Tigresses dominated the contest from start to finish to secure their second consecutive victory and improve to a 4-3 win-loss record heading into the second round of the eliminations.
Angeline Poyos led the charge for UST with 16 points built on 15 attacks and a service ace, while also contributing nine excellent receptions and four excellent digs.
Regina Jurado chipped in 10 points along with eight excellent digs, while rookie Avril Bron added another 10 markers highlighted by four service aces, three attacks, and three blocks for the España-based squad.
UST seized control early in the match and maintained its momentum throughout the three-set affair, leaning on the offensive trio of Poyos, Jurado, and Jonna Perdido to dictate the tempo and keep the Lady Tamaraws from mounting any sustained rally.
Despite attempts to respond, FEU struggled to break through UST’s organized defense and steady attacking rhythm.
Jazlyn Ellarina finished with 10 points to lead the Lady Tamaraws, whose three-game winning streak came to an end as they closed the first round of eliminations with the same 4-3 record as UST.
In another match, the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles finally broke through with their first win of the season after sweeping the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors, 25-19, 25-23, 25-16.
Jihan Chuatico paced Ateneo with 12 points built on six attacks, five blocks, and a service ace.
Ana Hermosura also delivered 12 markers from 11 attacks and a service ace, while rookies Dona Mae de Leon and Zel Tsunashima contributed 10 points apiece for the Blue Eagles.
Khy Cepada scored 13 points and Van Bangayan added 11 for the Lady Warriors, who remained winless after seven games in the tournament./PN
