IT SEEMS that the management of Central Philippine University or CPU was caught with their “pants down.”
Before you have erotic visions of CPU president Dr. Teodoro Robles literally caught with his knickers down with someone other than his wife in Moonlight Lodge, that is not the case. Far from it. Yes, there was a faux pas committed by CPU but it is not of the carnal erotic kind.
And there is no Mr. Grey in CPU and there is no sequel to a “Much Darker Shade of Grey” in the academic setting.
Folks, take note here before you start throwing hollow blocks or pandesal with hand grenade inside that moi is using the phrase “caught with his knickers down” as a figure of speech or a metaphor; it is not to be taken literally.
You’re much more intelligent than a certain Pia Ranada who claims to be a reporter of that blog site whose name moi cannot recall.
For the uninitiated: a figure of speech is a word or phrase that has a meaning other than the literal meaning.
Metaphor is a figure of speech that describes an object or action in a way that isn’t literally true but helps explain an idea or make a comparison.
So we’re clear on that. Let’s see what the faux pas was at CPU and if it really was erroneous and not deliberate.
Here are excerpts from the Nov. 8 issue of Panay News:
“A laboratory fee of P3,000 was erroneously inputted in the computer database system of Central Philippine University (CPU), making it appear that its Grade 12 senior high school students have to pay this additional amount.
“CPU president Dr. Teodoro Robles told Panay News the university was instituting the necessary correction.
“‘We will not charge a laboratory fee if (the subject has) no laboratory,’ clarified Robles.
“He apologized to the parents and students for the inadvertent error that was reflected in the registration forms of Grade 12 students.
“‘I think what happened was, without proper consultation, they added in the base computer data that if it is a certain subject, there is a laboratory. They assumed that there is a lab, but there is no lab. For example, Chemistry (subject),’ said Robles.
“He did not say who these they that he was referring to.
“CPU senior high school students are only charged P25,000 tuition per semester plus P6,000 miscellaneous fees, said Robles.
“‘We are glad that this was brought up or I would not have discovered the erroneous addition of the (laboratory) fee,’ he added.
“A mother of a CPU Grade 12 student recently complained that “the school management met with us parents a few days ago, telling us not to worry because all fees would not be hiked.’ She cried foul upon learning that she had to pay more.
“Robles said those who already paid the erroneous additional fee would be reimbursed.
“He also said he would be discussing with CPU’s vice president for finance ‘how we can make changes in the computer system’ to avoid a repeat of the error.
“‘We apologize. We did not intend to do that,’ stressed Robles.”

Based on what Dr. Teodoro Robles said, someone just waltzed into the computer database system of CPU and without any authorization inputted an additional P3,000 to the tuition fees of Grade 12 students.
Moi is having difficulty believing that. CPU is supposed to be an institution of higher learning with integrity and morals. It is not the Commission on Elections wherein they can tamper with the Precinct Count Optical Scanners or PCOS machines to manipulate the election results and get away with it.
Come to think of it, CPU could have gotten away with it if it were not for a parent who brought this fiasco to the attention of Panay News.
Here’s the three thousand pesos question: Who did it and who are they?
Can anybody with access to the computer database system of CPU just input or delete any data or figure without any authorization?
Which makes one wonder: Who are these powerful “they” that they can just input an additional P3,000 without the University President’s knowledge, much more his approval.
Another three thousand pesos question: Why didn’t the cashiers and the personnel in charge of enrolment notice anything unusual unless they were aware of the additional charge?
Dr. Teodoro Robles was caught with his pants down. Here’s hoping he was wearing Calvin Klein and not going commando.
