BACOLOD City – The Cadiz City government in Negros Occidental unveiled on Sunday, Nov. 5, the marker for the Loreta (Daday) V. Alacre Evacuation Center (LVAEC) at the Cadiz Viejo National High School compound.

Alacre, 49, was a native of Sitio Camay-an, Barangay Cadiz Viejo, and an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Tel Aviv, Israel. She died during a surprise attack by Hamas militants on Oct. 7.

Alacre had spent 19 years working as a caregiver, from Taiwan to Israel, and was one of four Filipino casualties.

Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. of Cadiz City, who led the unveiling, said naming the newly established evacuation center after Alacre is the city’s way of honoring her memory.

“Daday will always be with us. The LVAEC will remind all Cadiznons of our own heroine,” he said. Escalante praised Alacre an icon of perseverance, persistence, hope, and selflessness, adding, “She’s our bagong bayani, and thus deserves this lasting marker within an edifice fit to honor her memory.”

The mayor also expressed gratitude to the city council for passing a resolution to name the evacuation center after Alacre.

Her remains were laid to rest at the Caduha-an Public Cemetery in Barangay Caduha-an, Cadiz City, on the afternoon of Nov. 5, with many relatives, friends, and classmates gathering to bid farewell.

“Though she’s finally out of our sight, her enduring legacy, marked by her unique heroism, will forever be etched in the hearts of the Cadiznons,” Escalante said.

Additionally, Escalante urged other OFW families in Cadiz to be judicious with their loved ones’ earnings abroad.

“Daday’s case should serve as an eye-opener for all OFWs from Cadiz and their families to value their earnings and manage them wisely,” he said.

The city government intends to discuss potential lifetime assistance with the Alacre family, which may include employment for her siblings, scholarships for nieces and nephews, or livelihood support, among other forms of aid./PN
