ILOILO City – Senior Superintendent Remus Zacharias Canieso, former director of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO), has been cited for keeping the metropolis peaceful.
Canieso is now the chief of the directorial staff of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6).
Following his reassignment on Tuesday last week, city government department heads issued a resolution commending Canieso.
“We will recommend to the city council to pass a similar resolution,” said City Administrator Hernando Galvez.
Before leaving the ICPO, Canieso recommended that the city government acquire security cameras and use these in every occasion as part of efforts to keep the city safe.
He also suggested setting up a command center for peace and order.
The ICPO’s new director is Senior Superintendent Henry Biñas, a native of Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo whose last assignment was director of Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office.
Ozamiz City police chief, Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido, was originally assigned to take over Canieso’s post but his reassignment was scrapped over still unfinished business – the campaign against illegal drugs – in that city.
On Aug. 29, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, publicly named and shamed as a drug protector, welcomed the deployment to Iloilo of Espenido as announced by President Rodrigo Duterte but reminded the police official to observe the rule of law.
The mayors of Ozamiz City and Albuera, Leyte linked to the illegal drug trade were killed in separate police operations where Espenido was chief of police.
Sen. Franklin Drilon, a cousin of Mabilog, said Espenido’s Iloilo deployment was “a cause of concern because of his track record.”
Speaking to city government employees after the flag-raising ceremony at city hall, Mabilog said he expected Espenido to do what the police official himself said he would – gather evidence first and investigate before jumping to conclusions.
Mabilog rejected the President’s charge that he was coddling drug traffickers.
“With God as my witness, I have never protected anyone, especially in illegal drugs. Never. I will never do that,” said Mabilog./PN
