ILOILO – A former mayor is overseeing illegal gambling operations in the province’s 4th and 5th districts, a source told Panay News.
The operations kicked off after this former official met with partners at a hotel in Mandurriao, Iloilo City two weeks ago, the source added.
Just this Sunday, Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. ordered new Iloilo provincial police director Superintendent Harold Tuzon to continue the drive against illegal drugs and illegal gambling.
The ex-mayor was one of the six new illegal gambling operators that met to plan their Iloilo operations at a new hotel in Mandurriao this July 20, according to the source.
In the meeting two weeks ago, others present were a certain Gary, a town councilor; a big official from the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) and other new illegal gambling operators in the province, according to the source.
A certain police Senior Inspector from PRO-6’s Regional Special Operations Unit was coordinating with the illegal gambling operators on behalf of a high police official who demanded a share from the proceeds of the illegal activity, the source further disclosed.
In the July 20, a Police Officer 2 was the one who represented the ranking police official. But he fell out of the official’s good graces after their illegal gambling plan was leaked to the press.
According to the source, old illegal gambling operators were displaced by the new operators with the help of the high police official.
“The old operators stopped because of massive police operations targeting their bet collectors. The six new gambling lords then took over,” the Panay News source said.
The high-ranking police official ordered the operations after the old gambling operators refused to give P1-million goodwill money and also give this official a five percent share from the proceeds of the operations, the source revealed.
Governor Defensor wanted to get to the bottom of reports that police officers were protecting illegal gambling lords, said Provincial Administrator Raul Banias in a previous interview.
“Wala pili. Kon sin-o man da ya nga koridor, bangka (financiers) dakpon,” Banias said, “para kon may magreklamo, mabal-an ni Governor kag ma-confirm kon may ara gid nga naga-[protehir] nga mga opisyal sang pulis.”
Aside from the ex-mayor, other new illegal gambling operators were a retired Philippine Army colonel and member of the Philippine Military Academy, Class 1986; a cock farm operator in the 1st District and “Mason brother” of the police general; and a lawyer well-connected to a politically-influential family by way of marriage, said the source./PN
