MANILA – The Office of the Ombudsman has charged former Tayasan, Negros Oriental mayor Anthony Isidro Bayawa III for allegedly failing to liquidate P95,000 worth of cash advances to cover various expenses from 2006 to 2008.

The Ombudsman accused Bayawa with three counts of failure of an accountable officer to render accounts as defined and penalized under Article 218 of the Revised Penal Code before the Sandiganbayan.

Bayawa made a P30,000 cash advance for his travel to Manila on Jan. 26 to 27 in 2006 and another P25,000 for the Pasalamat De Tayasan Festival in 2007, case information showed.

Bayawa also received P40,000 to cover expenses for his attendance to the orientation of newly elected municipal local chief executives in Cagayan de Oro City from Jan. 30 to Feb. 3 in 2008.

“Bayawa failed to liquidate all the cash advances more than two months after the 30-day period required by the Commission on Audit lapsed,” the Ombudsman said.

The Ombudsman also set a bail bond of P18,000 for Bayawa’s provisional liberty.

The case against the former mayor has been raffled to the anti-graft court’s Second Division./PN
