BORACAY – Municipal councilors in Malay, Aklan were alarmed by the rampant charging of alleged fake tickets to tourists doing snorkeling in this island resort.
Fake tickets are issued at snorkeling spots in Tambisaan (Barangay Manoc-Manoc) and Stations 1 and 3 at the White Beach, according to Sangguniang Bayan (SB) member Dante Pagsuguiron.
“The situation is alarming,” Pagsuguiron said. “One ticket worth P40 is issued to a group of snorkelers, who should be charged individually.”
Tickets with six-digit serial numbers are fake. The local government-issued stamped tickets for snorkelers have seven-digit serial numbers.
“Hinahati ang pera. Ang taga-kolekta sa snorkeling areas ay hindi empleyado ng Malay at kung empleyado naman ay hindi under sa Office ng Municipal Treasurer,” Pagsuguiron stressed.
Pagsuguiron said he received last week three types of tickets in snorkeling areas without stamps and with different sizes.
Snorkeling collections from August 2016 to May this year reached P1.5 million. The local government raised the ticket price to P40 from P20 starting January this year.
“We are expecting more revenues from snorkeling activities since tourist arrivals also increased,” Pagsuguiron said.
Meanwhile SB member Jupiter Aelfred Gallenero said the culprits “are depriving the municipal government of income.”
“We are targeting P450 million in revenue this year but the snorkeling collections are improperly remitted to [the local government],” Gallenero said.
Snorkeling collections are also shared with barangays Yapak, Manoc-manoc and Balabag.
