ILOILO City – The Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 6 hosted a familiarization tour for Malaysian bloggers and the media who visited Negros Occidental from Oct. 21-24 .
DOT regional director Atty. Helen J. Catalbas said she was happy with the realization of the tour that was agreed upon by the DOT and the Philippine Department of Tourism-Malaysia Office.
“In 2015, DOT Region 6 hosted the editor and photographer of the ‘Santai Travel Magazine’ which featured the Dinagyang Festival of Iloilo City and Sipalay City, Negros Occidental on the cover and at least eight inside pages of the publication,” Catalbas said.
Malaysia remains to be one of Western Visayas’ fastest growing tourist markets since 2013 with 5,970 tourist arrivals; and 20,296 in 2014.
In 2014, DOT-6 embarked on its First Tourism Business Mission in Singapore and Malaysia which led the agency to reach 36,419 tourist arrivals in 2015.
Catalbas believes that the familiarization tours are ideal avenues to showcase the region’s tourism destinations. With the help of the media and travel bloggers, the region can stir curiosity among Malaysian travelers and other nationalities. (With a report from PIA/PN)
