ILOILO – To steer more young people away from risky behaviors, the provincial government will open 10 more teen centers next year.
These school-based multi-purpose teen centers have helped Iloilo’s youths become more responsible citizens, said Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr.
Among the risky teen behaviors that the centers hope to address include premarital sex, taking illegal drugs and alcohol, smoking, gangsterism, and crimes such as robberies.
“We have already established 42 school-based multipurpose teen centers in the whole province. Eight more will be inaugurated before the end of the year,” said Defensor.
This initiative under the Provincial Population Office has contributed to the significant reduction on the number of teenagers engaging in risky behaviors.
The governor also said that they are strengthening the “Iskolar sang Iloilo Program” which will soon include persons with disabilities and members of the indigenous communities.
Last school year, the scholarship program has produced 23 graduates. Of these graduates, one graduated as summa cum laude, one magna cum laude, and 10 cum laude.
The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office has also implemented a skills training program for young people who are members of the Pag-asa Youth Association of the Philippines. (PIA-Iloilo/PN)
