KALIBO, Aklan – A 32-year-old tricycle driver in this capital town was accused of sexually assaulting passengers.
Jeffrey Andrade of Barangay Polo, New Washington town admitted he was previously accused of rape but denied laying a hand on any of the passengers who recently reported him to the police.
Three female students claimed Andrade tried to molest them, said Chief Inspector Terence Paul Sta. Ana, municipal police chief.
Two of the complainants were senior high school students.
They boarded Andrade’s tricycle (plate number FF25191) around 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 22 at the capitol to buy pet food.
Instead of heading to the downtown, the driver insisted on taking them to barangays New Buswang and Andagao, police said.
One of the girls claimed the driver fondled her knees.
Fearing for their safety, the students told the drive to pull over near a condotel on Magdalena Village Extension in New Buswang. They sought help from a condotel staffer and reported to the police.
On the same day, an Aklan State University student on her way home hired Andrade’s tricycle near AKY gasoline station on Roxas Avenue Extension and asked to be taken to the Dumaguit jeepney terminal on Quezon Avenue.
But Andrade took the 17-year-old the capitol area, police said. With the driver ignoring her plea to be taken to the terminal, the girl jumped off the tricycle and sought police help.
“I was shaking on my way to the terminal,” she said in Filipino. “At home, I almost broke down while telling my mother what happened to me.”
Police questioned Andrade but the suspect denied the claims. Officers said he is facing more trouble for driving a colorum unit (without franchise).
Police reminded commuters to take note of the body and plate numbers of the tricycles they are hiring, especially at night, to avoid falling victim to abusive drivers. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
