SAN JOSE, Antique – Police in this capital town are rallying public support to their campaign against illegal gambling.
Their Municipal Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operation Task Group had been converted into the Municipal Anti-Illegal Gambling Special Operation Task Group.
Holding an information drive “is our way of telling the community that our campaign against illegal gambling is as serious as our drive against illegal drugs,” Superintendent Norby Escobar said in a radio interview.
Escobar said that, just like illegal drugs, gambling is “also an addicting activity that if left unchecked will contribute to the deterioration of moral fiber and breed corruption, among others.”
If a gambler keeps losing games, they will resort to stealing and other crimes to get money just to satiate the urge to bet, he said.
President Rodrigo Duterte has issued an executive order enjoining law enforcement units to step up the campaign against all forms of illegal gambling.
Escobar said they are targeting jueteng, cockfighting, jai-alai, bookies, game-fixing, numbers, bingo, masiao, last two, among other lotteries.
Anyone engaged in any form of illegal gambling will be apprehended and charged, the municipal police chief stressed. (PIA/PN)
