Ferry passenger hospitalized due to heat

BACOLOD City – A passenger of a Bacolod-bound roll-on/roll-off ferry fell ill and was rescued by members of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) on Holy Thursday, March 28, in this city’s BREDCO port.

The ill passenger was identified as Edmund Zamora, a resident of Hinigaran town in Negros Occidental.

According to the Coast Guard Station Northern Negros Occidental, they received a call from the ferry vessel M/V Maria Theresa informing them that Zamora is complaining of shortness of breath while en route to Bacolod City from Dumangas port in Iloilo.

The vessel’s second mate and a PCG sea marshal provided first aid to the passenger. Upon arrival at the BREDCO port, Zamora was turned over to BFP paramedics.

It was determined that Zamora fell ill due to the high temperatures being experienced at the time. He was quickly transported to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, where he received proper medical attention and was stabilized by doctors.

According to last Thursday’s monitoring by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, temperatures in the town of Dumangas hovered at 42 degrees Celsius.

The Department of Health in Western Visayas had earlier warned the public to take extra precautions and drink plenty of water to avoid any heat-related illnesses. (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
