MANILA – Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws had a decent debut under a new coach in the 2017 Premier V-League Collegiate Conference, scoring 25-17, 25-21, 25-14 against San Sebastian College Lady Stags.

Negrense Bernadeth Pons top-scored with 13 points – 10 attacks, two service aces and a block – for Lady Tamaraws, which tied Ateneo Lady Eagles on top of the standings with a 1-0 win-loss record after the Sunday night match at San Juan Arena.

Toni Rose Basas added 11 while Celine Domingo and Heather Villareal combined for 17 points.

Masaya naman kami sa inilaro ng mga bata pero may kailangan pang ayusin,” said new head coach George Pascua. “Dadaanin na lang namin sa ensayo at tiyak makukuha namin ang gusto naming gawin.”

FEU jumped to an early 12-4 lead in the opening set behind Pons and Domingo. Lady Stags countered with consecutive points to come to within 17-23 but back-to-back hits by Domingo and Pons closed the set.

Unlike in the opening set, the game was much closer in the second frame. FEU held on to a slim 15-12 lead before unloading a huge finishing run behind Pons, Domingo and Basas to build a 2-0 set advantage.

SSC tried to keep the match close early in the third set but Lady Tamaraws managed to pull away anew behind Basas and Pons for a 16-10 edge. The gap grew to double digits for a straight-set win.

Meanwhile, San Beda College Red Lionesses avoided an upset by defeating Technological Institute of the Philippines Lady Engineers 25-13, 25-18, 25-27, 25-13. Franchesca Racraquin had 19 points for Red Lionesses./PN
