BIÑAN, Laguna – The Philippines ended its campaign in the 19th AVC Asian Women’s Senior Championship with a loss to Kazakhstan at the Alonte Sports Arena.
The defeat relegated the Southeast Asian Games-bound squad to eighth place – the country’s second best in the tournament since its fifth place finish in the 1983 edition.
Kazakhstan downed the Filipinas 25-20, 25-16, 21-25, 21-25, 15-3.
But the eighth-place finish was enough for the Philippines to make it to the AVC Asian Volleyball Cup next year.
“Kinapos siguro (pero) at least nag-five sets tayo, p-in-rove natin na kaya pala natin ’tong mga ’to,” said coach Francis Vicente. “So, kailangan lang natin pumukpok pa sa ensayo, push pa natin ang sarili natin para gumaling.”
After dropping the first two sets, the Philippines went aggressive in the third frame, building an early 16-13 edge before halting the numerous rallies by Kazakhstan with hits from Alyssa Valdez and Jaja Santiago.
In the fourth set, the Philippines trailed early 2-8 before launching a run to surge to a 20-18 lead on a Santiago attack. Conversions from Ilongga Jovelyn Gonzaga allowed the Filipinas to force a fifth set.
But the Philippines faded in the decider as Kazakhstan raced to a 10-1 start. Gonzaga and Santiago stopped their bleeding with back-to-back hits but Kazakhstan drained consecutive points to close the match.
Yetakerina Zhdanova led the scoring with 24 while Katerina Tatko added 15 for Kazakhstan, which also beat the Philippines 25-23, 25-20, 25-19 in the group stage. Santiago top-scored with 18 while Valdez and Gonzaga had 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Philippines./PN
