MANILA – Meralco Manila Sparks tightened its grip of the top spot in the Philippines Football League after beating Ceres Negros 2-1 at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
Curt Dizon and Simon Greatwich scored a goal each to give Meralco 36 points on 11 wins, three draws and two losses.
After a scoreless first half on Wednesday night, Meralco drew first blood on a Dizon close-range hit in the 53rd minute. A conversion by Greatwich from a pass by Negrense Gerardo Valmayor followed in the 73rd.
Three minutes after the Greatwich hit, Ceres reduced the deficit 1-2 on a header by Manuel Herrera but the home team failed to score a follow-up as the defense of Meralco’s backline held the fort.
The defeat – the club’s first in its turf after winning the previous six home matches – caused Ceres to get stuck in fourth place with 25 points on eight wins, a draw and three losses.
Meanwhile, at the University of Makati football field, Adam Reed scored the game-tying goal early in the second half for Kaya Makati to settle with a 2-2 draw with JP Voltes Marikina.
Takumi Uesato immediately put JP Voltes ahead with a close-range hit but a conversion by Robert Lopez Mendy for Kaya quickly followed for a 1-1 count.
Just before halftime break, JP Voltes regained the edge 2-1 on Uesato’s second goal but Kaya knotted the count again with a Reed conversion.
Kaya was still in second place with 28 points on eight wins, four draws and five losses while JP Voltes was in fifth place with 23 points on seven wins, two draws and six losses./PN
