ILOILO City – Fire struck a residential area in Barangay Benedicto, Jaro district at around 4 p.m. yesterday.
More than 60 houses – mostly made of light materials – were affected, City Fire Marshal Bartolome Beliran said, citing initial estimates.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) declared a “fire out” at 7:33 p.m. – more than three hours later.
“We could not yet give the exact number of affected houses and families right now,” Beliran told Panay News yesterday.
“We are still waiting for lists from barangay officials,” he said.
The affected families have been evacuated to the Jaro covered gym.
Citing records from Barangay Benedicto, radio reports pegged the number of affected families at around 80.
Aid – including canned goods and rice, among other food items – have started coming in from the Social Welfare department, the city government and private donors, radio reports said.
Firefighters were informed about the blaze at around 3:54 p.m.
Starting from the house of Reynaldo Ledesma, the fire quickly spread to the adjacent houses, initial investigation showed.
That the houses were very close to each other made the response difficult, according to Beliran.
“There was limited space for our fire trucks,” the city fire marshal said. “And most of the houses were made of light materials, allowing the blaze to easily spread from one structure to the next.”
Fire investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire as of press time.
If based only on initial estimates, the blaze could be the biggest to strike a residential area in the city since the fire that hit barangays Bakhaw and Bolilao in Mandurriao district on Aug. 31.
Most of the houses there – many operating as boardinghouses – were made of light materials, too.
Property damage reached P10 million. There were no casualties but the bureau recorded 10 injuries – three firefighters and seven civilians.
It took firefighters over an hour to put out the blaze.
In Bolilao, 30 houses were totally damaged and three partially damaged, while in Bakhaw, 50 houses were totally damaged and four partially damaged./PN
