ILOILO City – Two fire trucks rushing to a fire scene in Barangay Zamora-Melliza, City Proper late Sunday night collided. Four fire fighters and one of the drivers were injured.
The collision took place at the intersection of Iznart and Delgado streets.
The following were hospitalized:
* Fire Officer 1 Jomille Edrolosano, 28
* Fire Officer 3 Frankie Octavio, 47
* Fire Officer 3 Val Caesar Divinagracia, 37
* Fire Officer 3 Windell Barrientos
* Ramil Tiope, driver
The fire trucks belonged to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) – Jaro substation and volunteer fire group Federation Iloilo Fire Brigade, Inc.
The collision happened around 11:10 p.m., according to Senior Police Officer 2 Julius Uy of the city police.
Edrolosano was driving the BFP’s fire truck while Tiope, the Federation’s.
A GDR Taxi parked nearby was also hit but its driver, 41-year-old Edison Buenafe Sara, Iloilo, was unhurt.
“We always remind our personnel that their safety comes first but sometimes accidents happen,” said City Fire Marshal Bartolome Beliran.
THE FIRE
A day after a fire struck a residential area in Barangay Benedicto, Jaro district, another hit the city, this time in Barangay Zamora-Melliza in the City Proper.
Fifteen houses were razed late Sunday night, eight of these totally gutted.
Beliran said they received a fire call around 10:51 p.m.
The eight totally burned houses were owned by Tricia Joy Mendoza, Jonah Mae Gabayeron, Crisanto Mendoza, Gina Nilmeda, Lemuel Felezario, Rodney Hermania, Edileo Espinosa, and a certain retired policeman initially identified only as Indico.
Beliran said the fire started at Tricia Joy Mendoza’s house.
The partially damaged houses were owned by Roan Mae Gabayeron, Gurgend Vega, Yvory Del Mundo, Lore Jespeñe, Maria Luz Bialen, and the Bornales family.
Bartolome’s estimate of damage reached P200,000.
Prior to the fire, portions of the barangay suffered from a brownout, Beliran learned. But “overloading” and “short circuit” were being eyed as possible causes of the fire.
